Francesco Auxilia earned a degree in medicine and surgery from the University of Naples, with a specialty in hygiene and preventive medicine. In 1987 he earned his MSc in community medicine (now public health) from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. In 1992 he was a researcher in public health and assumed the post of associate professor of hygiene at the University of Milan, where in 2003 he became full professor and held a 6-year term (2014-2020) as director of the Department of Biomedical Sciences and Health. He teaches many under- and graduate courses at the University of Milan, where he is co-director of the masters program in planning, programming, and design of healthcare organization systems and health and social care services conducted jointly with the Politecnico and the Università del Sacro Cuore, Milan.
Between 1982 and 2020 he worked at the Fondazione IRCCS Ca’Granda Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico di Milano, where he was director of the Control of Management and Programming unit, among other roles. In March 2020 he became director of the Quality, Risk Management, and Accreditation unit at the Fatebenefratelli-Sacco Community Hospital, Milan. His research interests revolve around patient safety and risk management, with a focus on HAI.
