Adjunct Professor and former Full Professor of Global Health at the University of Milan, where he was responsible for teaching and research in this field of study until 2025, and co-founder of the Centre for Multidisciplinary Research for Global Health (MAGH). He is also Senior Visiting Scientist at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC/WHO) and Honorary Professor at Queen Mary University of London. In recent years, his research activities have focused on tuberculosis, COVID-19, HPV, and other global health topics. He established and coordinated the first and only Master’s programme in Global Health in Italy. From 2003 to 2017, he served as Director of the Global Tuberculosis Programme (GTB) at the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva. In this role, he managed an annual budget of approximately US$20 million and more than 70 staff and consultants, including international experts in various disciplines. He graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Turin and specialized in internal medicine, infectious diseases, and AIDS at Cabrini Medical Center (NY Medical College) in New York, USA, and at Beth Israel Hospital, Harvard Medical School in Boston. He has worked in over 50 countries worldwide and has held Visiting Professor and teaching positions at several universities, including Johns Hopkins, Harvard, McGill, Sydney, Geneva, Liverpool, Pavia, Modena and Reggio Emilia, and Brescia. His work has been cited more than 73,000 times and his h-index is 121. He is among the 10 most cited authors worldwide in the field of tuberculosis and among the top 10 Italian scientists in Epidemiology–Medicine (Clinical Science).
